
Jim was born December 2, 1936, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Cornelia Elizabeth (Wachs) and Marshall James Carner. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1963. While there, he met the love of his life, Helen Weber. They married on August 31, 1963, and celebrated 62 years of marriage in 2025.
Jim and Helen settled in Colorado Springs, where Jim worked for Hewlett-Packard for 30 years and raised their three children, Christine, Jay, and Melissa. They later retired to Cedaredge and most recently lived in Grand Junction. Jim loved the Colorado lifestyle and enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, gardening, and woodworking. He was known for his quick wit, warm humor, and kindness, and treasured many winters spent in Arizona.
Jim is survived by his wife, Helen; children Christine (Hugh) Gibbons, Jay (Nickie) Carner, and Melissa (Chris) Pipkin; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A funeral Mass will be held January 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip Benizi Church in Cedaredge, with a rosary at 10:30 a.m
